DEMOCRACY IS FOR. AND THE WEIRDEST THING ABOUT THE AND THE WEIRDEST THING ABOUT THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE IS THE FACT ELECTORAL COLLEGE IS THE FACT THAT IF IT WASN’T SPECIFICALLY THAT IF IT WASN’T SPECIFICALLY IN THE CONSTITUTION FOR THE IN THE CONSTITUTION FOR THE PRESIDENCY, IT WOULD BE PRESIDENCY, IT WOULD BE UNCONSTITUTIONAL. 1. Mr. Trump by suggesting that that the next G-7 meeting be held on his hotel properties whether or not they are managed by his children is unethical for he is using his status as President to make a personal business gain.

  2. Everyone's vote should count! Period! The electoral college is a fraud and should be done away with! If you live in a red state and you're democrat, or if you live in a blue state and you're republican, your vote doesn't count! I'm pretty sure that everyone should believe that!!!!!

  3. Wasn't one of the reasons for the Electoral College to stop a demagogue from becoming president…… Another reason to get rid of it.

  4. Are all the Morons Spewing Nothing But Crap really as stupid as they project themselves? Yes, yes they are. Hillary lost the popular vote by a large margin, especially if you take out all the illegal and dead voters! You morons keep watching this crap and still believed them when they said Hillary will win by a landslide…yep! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂👍😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

  5. I also really think the US needs a ranked choice voting system so the whole third party vote being throwing your vote away thing isn't a thing there. Want to vote for Jill Stein? Do Jill, then Hillary, then Donald. If Jill isn't in top when the votes are being counted, then your vote counts as much as a vote for Hillary as if you had put her first.

  6. It alerdy is one vote means one vote.
    States are self governing.
States are mini countries that by desing self govern.
    Democrats want a king.
Republicans want goverment to be almost as if it was not.
    States should be self governing.

  7. Chris Hayes is absolutely right. The Electoral College doesn't fulfill any meaningful purpose these days except to thwart the will of the American people. One person, one vote. That's the way most people realize it should be. And as Chris Hayes said, 51% should get to call the shots on 100% of the country because the alternative is 49% calling the shots. Which has more legitimacy?

  8. Example: In the 100 Meter Dash, with Republicans crossing in second place:

Republicans – "No I didn't lose! It's you, bad boy, you meanie, you were faster but if you add up the other runners' finishing positions I come up with 8 points to your 1 point." 😵

  9. One person: one vote!

Republicans: "But corporations are people tooo, like literally. Plus, why don't you Democrats want Russia to influence our votes… aren't they also people?"

  10. Chris Hayes man of the people lol. Man who blamed Susan Sarandon for Hillary's loss. Ironic in the context of this video, where he's saying that every person is entitled to their vote… yet in the 2016 election primary, they were not. Chris Hayes, champion of the 1%.

  11. Cheating Republican to them cheating is winning?!?! Somebody didn't have a mom or a dad that was decent! You would think a fake ballon baby bone spur would wake you up! Trump said…. Putin if you have these 30 thousand emails. Or ..I can shoot someone on 5th avenue and not lose votes, so a trumpet went and shot someone and three others injured to interfere with voting! And a Neo-Nazi murdered Heather and Trump said… Violence on both sides! There's only murdering going on on trumpers side. How about how 80,000 people not being paid for 4 weeks. Or maybe this one…Trump said Kim and I we fell in love! Trump loves murderers, why? Birds of a feather flock together. Sick people love sickness. Donald Trump sleeps around on his wife's paid $130,000 +$150,000 so he can win the election. Donald Trump needed to win cuz he's in debit to puttie Putin. Donald Trump is using the United States as his own personal 🏦 bank. Individual 1 is Trump! Why is it criminal still in office? He has no idea about climate change! I can go on all day about the sickness in my country.
    Sad
So sad love love love 💔 g-20.in

  12. Make all the arguments you like… unless you can amend the Constitution, the Electoral College is here to stay. Good luck getting the smaller states to agree. Also, let's be honest… one of the reasons the Democrats want the Electoral College gone is because they keep losing it! If they won it more often, they'd have no complaints. Sour grapes from sore losers is never going to be a strong enough basis to get the Electoral College removed from the Constitution.

  13. My vote really really doesn't count because I vote blue in a red state. However, I just read in the news that the courts say that electors can vote any dang way they want. Imagine 90% of my state voting for DT, and 100% of the electors voting for Bernie!

  14. wow i'm actually impressed. thank god someone said it: alexander hamilton also wanted a king of the US and for the US to be the next world power/neo-new britain. the electoral college was alexander hamilton's idea. he believed, ironically, that if you gave the people to power to elect their leader they'd elect a DEMOGOGUE HAHA. thomas jefferson believed in a true direct democracy 1 person=1 vote and they tried that but george washington realized, trying to have a direct democracy by counted paper ballets on horseback across 13 states was a logistical nightmare, so they went to the electoral college system because stuff was done by horseback. any republican claiming proudly america is a republic doesn't understand that a republic is more oligarchical and that what is truly america, as understood by the jeffersonian rendtion of americanism, is a true democracy. republicans are neo-brit idiots who dont even realize they're acting as the intellectual descendants of a neo-brit who wanted a god forsaken king of the US.

  15. This is why we need a progressive, this is the kind of corruption they are looking to change, the centrists have had many chances to fix this… but they haven't, they have hardly even tried!

  16. Why are we still voting on Tuesdays?
People should have a week to vote in person and or a national holiday .
Voting by mail and automatic voter registration should be expanded as well

  17. So we should let illegal votes from California and New York and other democrat run places decide who president? Even if you don't believe that New York and California would only decide things. No one would vote in the elections. You think presidential voter turn out is bad now? Tell most of US your vote doesn't count. Less then 10% voters will turn out. That is what you want. Liberal elite to elect liberals as president. Not most of america.
"How do you know democrats are cheating" Most of democrat run states were the first to deny trump vote rolls when investigating voter fraud. What are they hiding? Maybe california doesn't want people looking into ballet harvesting is use to fraudulently steal things like house seats.
In the minority while showing a map full of red behind you.

  18. And the first time a conservative wins the popular vote all the Democrats would fight to re establish the Electoral College.

  19. Politician is a nasty word. Every politician caught election cheating should immediately be ousted an the majority vote should be elected Unpaid rally costs should come out of their paycheck or as in Trump's case business.

  20. What he fails to mention is if it was 1 vote = 1 vote only the high population areas will have all the power and all the benefits of the Senate and President. All the power would reside only in New York, California, Tx, FL and perhaps 2 other states. The votes of the rest of the country would not count (like Washington DC). That means only the agenda of those states would matter and only those states would benefit. If the Senate was by popular vote 30 states would not have any representation. Is the Electoral College outdated? Yes. It was built, like he said, because the wealthy did not want government by uneducated and unaware citizens and communications took a lot longer to cross the country. Don't forget individual states set how they vote for the electoral college. Most have majority rules (Winner take all) which means you only need 51% of the votes to get ALL the electoral votes (GOP loves this which is the only way they win!!!!!!!). If all States had Proportional Representation then it would be much more fair. Remember the # of electoral votes a state gets is, in part, based on population. It is 1 for each Rep in the House and 2 for each Senator. Hayes is mixing truth with misinformation and redactions of facts. Shame on him.

  21. Republicans in blue states should support this. Your vote in NY or CA doesn’t matter due to the EC. Same for progressives and liberals in WY or AL.

  22. I really enjoy your commentaries and interviews Chris, but please get out of the habit of saying "right?" after every third sentence. Thanks, and good luck with your new program — it's a winner! Even Rachel Maddow said so!

  23. Someone needs to explain to Chris Hayes that the US has a bicameral system of government – a senate, where each state gets the same 2 votes, and a house of representatives, where the population of the state is (sort of) taken into account, so that in the house, a high population state has more voting power than a low population state. No offense, I love Chris Hayes, but get your facts straight and don't mislead your audience, please.

  24. Abolish the college and the only the high population areas will be catered too by those in power. No aid or development for low population areas. New York, Calf. and Flordia dictates to the whole country how they will live and what they can do. Also please note the recent studies that show up to 3 mil. illegal votes from various sources. And the popular vote matches the college vote. Alos note that nome of them had any problem with the college until their loss to Trump. This is nothing but sour grapes.

  25. It's much more perverse when 35percent take 65percent and hold them hostage by doing the worst things possible and tell the 65percent it's only just started but the 65percent don't believe the 35percent will actually do even more damage, harm and terrorism will become an everyday life.

  26. This is what so many (democrats) have been saying for a long time, but AOC says it all these wimps start shaking in their boots (and gang up to attack her with most ridiculous of statements).
BTW, how's that Bush democracy working in Iraq – that is a case of foreign undemocracy bossing over oil wells

  27. The Founders decided only land cld vote because they also decided only men who OWNED land cld vote

So they don't 51% to boss 49% but it's ok that 35% gets to boss around 65%? Yeah, that makes sense. Not to mention that ppl who live in states w only ONE rep, get THREE electoral college votes, meaning their voter LITERALLY counts more than ppl in larger states. And, as we all know, by the end of the election, both parties are only fighting to win the votes in purple states. Plus, every Republican in a solidly blue state, and every Dem in a solidly red state, simply has their presidential vote erased.

The Founders are often treated like gods – but they were flawed human beings who made mistakes, and had the grace to realize that by making the Constitution amendable. They took the ideals of personal freedom, equality, and liberty from the Native Americans who lived in the Northeast, who did NOT bow to the leaders, who did not have a class system, and whose leadership was contingent on the people. The Founders liked these ideals, but they also wanted to preserve their own power. They wanted to get rid of a noble class based on inheritance, and allow for some mobility in society, but they wanted to make sure that a their own class, and ethnicity, and gender, remained in power. So, they made it so only white men with land cld vote.

  28. So, AOC and Chris Hayes, change the legislation. I dare you to try it. You will set states rights back 200 years, divide and destroy the country. You may end up with a President of New York or California but you wont be POTUS. Of course, the other 50 or so states may just invade and conquer your states and put you back in the fold under the Constitution, only you are now conquered people who may lose some rights in the peace treaty process. How's that sit with you?

  29. We should only vote using a computer system which takes in our specific requirements and basic information needed to direct us to the candidate who most fits our needs, just like the iPhone does to show us what we like to watch and purchase.

Any other voting system than that isn’t looking to help us.

Why is it that current technology is not being utilized in politics today?

  30. IMAGINE…..a simple system where ALL VOTES have equal value and there is no such thing as a 'battle ground state' anymore! Imagine running an election where a simple majority of voters wins the election, as per the will of the people that vote! After the disastrous 2000 and 2016 elections its painfully obvious we MUST abolish the OBSOLETE & UNFAIR EC system that keeps failing the American people. If the one party that far fewer voters support can still have an unfair stranglehold on power and dominate the majority, that system promotes tyranny NOT freedom. 31. Nice Idea- Unlikely to succeed with Ninja Turtle Grim Ripper Moscow Mitch running the show.. He rather die than to make the changes for the good of the country

  32. The electoral college didn’t protect the country by wisely discerning who would be an incompetent President and keeping him out of office, which supposition is used to justify its existence. It failed in that role abysmally and it overrode the popular vote to do so. A President elected by the popular vote might be bad, but arguably he or she wouldn’t be as bad as the grifter President and his thumping circus of neon-lit cruelty that we have now. My nephew, in his 40s, refuses to vote because he says his vote doesn’t count. He says 19% of the country controls who would be President, and we’re not in that 19% so voting is useless for us. If we want to encourage people to vote, and if we want all our citizens to be enfranchised, we should abolish the electoral college and elect our President by the popular vote.

  33. Brilliant breakdown of the way Fascists use Democracy to destroy Democracy… North Korea is a “Republic”…

  34. What I don't understand, Why a select group of corrupted people gets to decide whether there is an "Electoral College" or not, shouldn't the American people decide that? I always thought that the "Electoral College" thing did not make any sense at all… Basically a few can swivel the way an election is counted…or maybe I got it wrong still. lol

  35. Also, "Presidential Pardons" don't make sense to me… If the law found someone guilty, why is a President overriding it? That makes the law useless, doesn't it? It means "someone" is above the law after all.

  36. I’ve decided not to contribute to presidential campaigns. My vote in both the Primary and the Presidential election doesn’t count. My State has only Seven votes. I’ll support my Senators, congressperson, and possibly other Senators.

  38. The EC may one day be against Republicans. In fact, in 2016 a slight change of circumstances and the EC would have played against tRump. Trump would have lost the EC while winning the PV, if the Tea Party 6 million voters had joined Repukes, the Green Party 2.5 million voters joined Dems, and there would have voted half the Blacks in PA, WI and MI who voted for Obama in 2012 but decided not to vote in 2016.

  39. The number one problem with ALL American elections is it is first past the post, (ignoring things like Electoral college and Gerrymandering for a second) first past the post can produce a winner that 60/70% of the people don't want…..i.e. it doesn't give the people a real choice, Libertarians can take Votes away from Republicans when the Vote is dead in the water, it means nothing,
Similar with Votes for a Green Party candidate, obviously Green voters would prefer Democrats to Republicans….but by voting Green they could be electing a Republican!
If Bill Weld runs as an independent he will have no chance but he will take Votes from the Republican Nominee(Trump) and that will help elect a Democrat which Weld voters probably don't want!!
Preferential Voting is the ONLY fair and equitable system that is truly Democratic……it allows people to send a real message to Politicians what they really want……but then gives them a second and even 3rd choice once their number one vote is knocked out, both Republicans and Democrats would know their constituents better, they would know where their true loyalties were,
Democrats would find out how important the environment really was to the people who voted for them
Republicans may find out how unimportant the right to bare arms was to average Americans etc….or vice versa
it means even if you don't get what you want …..The majority won't get what they don't want and that is even more important……
First past the post is divide and conquer, once a country is divided it is easy to Conquer(That is what Putin is doing to America and it doesn't feel good does it?) It is not good for the American people and it ISN'T Democracy in action!
if you don't understand Preferential Voting this is basically how it works
You number the candidates in order of preference, say there are 4 possibilities, you put a 1 in the box of your first preference, a 2 in the box of your second preference and so on
Once the votes are counted the person who runs 4th is knocked out of the race, those votes are recounted and redistributed to their second preference, then the one who runs 3rd then is knocked out and we are down to a race in 2 but both of these candidates know they weren't the number one choice with a lot of voters and were lucky to get the votes, they know where they need to improve…..The Country wins…..well the people win, Big Business may lose a little by losing some of their control over the "system? but that ain't a bad thing, is it?

  40. This totally explains why the right wants to keep re drawing the lines……they want to own "the land" because if "the actual people" decided elections THEY WOULD LOSE

  41. For each vote to count roughly as much as every other vote in our national government, it's not enough to get rid of the Electoral College; you also need to get rid of the Senate–or at least deprive it of its ability to stop legislation that passes the House.

  42. So in the history of Presidential elections (just counting 1824-Present here because the popular vote was not annotated in years prior), the Electoral College vote has only outweighed popular vote 4 of the 5 times that the "non-popular" candidate won (the exception being John Quincy Adams in 1824). That would mean out of 48 election cycles since then (counting re-election wins), 22 Democratic party members, 24 Republican party members, and 2 members of the all but forgotten Whig party have been elected into power through this device. Given these numbers, I find it suspicious that this is just now becoming a hot button item.

  43. The idiots on the right think that there are no Republicans in the coasts. In February 2019, California had 19,978,449 registered voters, comprising 79.09% of its total eligible voters. Of those registered voters, 8,612,368 (43.11 percent) were registered Democrats, and 4,709,851 (23.57 percent) were Republicans. As of April of 2018, Democratic enrollment statewide in New York stood at 6,201,033 registered voters, just over 50 percent of all registered voters in the state. There are 2,823,758 registered Republicans, 22.7 percent of all registered voters, and 2,644,155 people registered unaffiliated with any party, 21.3 percent of all registered voters.

  44. It's going to be a while before this stupid system is removed.

You need at least half of the Supreme Court to die off (we're talking decades) AND have probably more than 66% of the House and Senate vote to get rid of it, as well as the President not vetoing it.

[it's probably worse conditions than that – my knowledge of US democracy is very limited]

  45. The Electoral College is in the Constitution so by definition it is Constitutional. The Constitution is changeable unlike many other Constitutions around the world, as 27 Amendments proves, but it is supposed to be difficult to change so that the issue of the day does not clog up the Constitution. This is an issue today, but will it be in 50 years? The Electoral College has gone against the popular vote three times in 250 years. It has been imperfect, that cannot be argued, but three times in 250 years is a pretty good record and I don't think people will find it important enough to change the Constitution. A more productive but much more difficult thing to do, is to figure out why didn't Clinton crush Trump and what the Democratic party needs to do to prevent a Trump victory in 2020. I think the Democrats will crush Trump, but they won't always have Trump to help them win. This makes us feel better and we will blow off some steam, but it does nothing to help the Democrats win.

  46. Yeah, no. There are far better ways an election can be won. Having a two party system is an American perversion. Watch some CGP grey videos on gerrymandering and proportional representation on how you can achieve good electoral reforms.

  47. No the system works out fine – the democrat media has more media channels, thus democrats get the popular vote – Hillary. The elect collage vote balances out the republicans vote . Trump simply just won .

  48. It's the Constitution of our republic. Our for Father's wrote the laws to work for every man woman and child. Otherwise California and New York would call every election. And that means 48 states wouldn't have any say so. So it's written and can't be changed
