Greta Thunberg to world leaders: ‘How dare you? You have stolen my dreams and my childhood’

My message is that
we’ll be watching you. k[Laughter/applause] This is all wrong. I shouldn’t be up here. I should be back in school
on the other side of the ocean. Yet you all come to us
young people for hope? How dare you! You have stolen my dreams and my
childhood with your empty words. And yet I’m one of the lucky ones. People are suffering. People are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning
of a mass extinction. And all you can talk about
is money and fairytales of eternal economic growth. How dare you! [Cheering/applause] For more than 30 years the science
has been crystal clear. How dare you continue to look away,
and come here saying that you are doing enough,
when the politics and solutions needed are still nowhere in sight. You say you “hear” us
and that you understand the urgency. But no matter how sad and angry I am,
I don’t want to believe that. Because if you really understood
the situation and still kept on failing to act,
then you would be evil. And that I refuse to believe.
[Applause] The popular idea of cutting
our emissions in half in 10 years only gives us a 50% chance
of staying below 1.5C degrees, and the risk of setting off irreversible
chain reactions beyond human control. 50% may be acceptable to you. But those numbers do not
include tipping points, most feedback loops,
additional warming hidden by toxic air pollution or the
aspects of equity and climate justice. They also rely on my generation
sucking hundreds of billions of tonnes of your CO2 out of the air with
technologies that barely exist. So a 50% risk is simply
not acceptable to us – we who have to live
with the consequences. How dare you pretend that this
can be solved with just business-as-usual and some technical solutions. With today’s emissions levels,
that remaining CO2 budget will be entirely gone within less
than eight and a half years. There will not be any solutions
or plans presented in line with these figures today. Because these numbers
are too uncomfortable. And you are still not mature
enough to tell it like it is. You are failing us. But the young people are starting
to understand your betrayal. The eyes of all future generations
are upon you. And if you choose to fail us
I say we will never forgive you. [Applause] We will
not let you get away with this. Right here, right now
is where we draw the line. The world is waking up. And change is coming,
whether you like it or not. Thank you.

  2. She sounds like me when I never got my enlistment bonus for signing a 6 year contract “you stole my hopes and dreams, how dare you”

  3. i like to walk on stage and tear that paper.. your anger should come from the heart.. STOP READING THE PAPER!..

  4. Children should not be listened to on such matters as energy policy for the same reason they are not allowed to vote. They did not sacrifice anything to build this civilization and therefore they do not value it. Actually I would have to say increase voting age to 25. Under 25 most vote for tax increases for the simple reason they haven’t paid any tax in their lifes(except sales tax of course, but not with the money they earned anyway).

  5. An actual joke in my opinion, the politics in germany abolished nuclear power plants, the cleanest energy in human history.
"I shouldn't be here, then stop talking bs for gods sake."

  6. Greta Thunberg is **** i hate this *** Talking trash making in the back and become a manufacture in 10 Years no one will remember her

  7. She is using paper for her notes which from trees that have been chopped down. She is starving us from oxygen 🙈 How Dare You!

  8. Shut the f**k up, boi if your bothered about school, go back and get your education, to further improve your argument, science doesn't ignore us. It takes years to develop efficient methods to prevent global warming issues. I also believe that you are under the impression that greenhouse gases are not needed, well they are but in a small quantity. Any way, its one thing reading a sheet, it's another thing getting up and making new methods. Making new solutions. Etc

  9. Face it lady you are doomed. From the weather in the last few days global warming is killing us like lung cancer does. I’m sorry but it’s true. Just see what’s going on around you.

  10. Notice how she says “I don’t want to believe” rather than “I can’t believe”. Big flaw if she wishes to persuade.

  11. No. Please stop this. This is insanity. Climate change is a reality. That’s what the planet does it is a self healing system. It destroys and re-heals. It’s the reality. Dinosaurs went extinct. Many species go extinct go everyday. Everything that starts must come to an end. You are fighting for the wrong cause.

  12. I find it so hard to stomach comments that demean Greta’s words simply because they think she’s privileged. Doesn’t her choice make you think of your own life as well? Surely all of us are more privileged than the kids whose living have been on the line. That therein lies the difference. She knows that she’s in a better position to cause change and improvement. What have we done to make the world a better place? Let alone for the disadvantaged that we continue to mention.

  13. ? How did I get here. What piss poor soap opera is this…………way over the top here. I wanted to feel something but I just ended up giggling.

  14. The way she said it is like the opposite of bold, its wheezing while her lung is collapsing on her.

    H o w D e A r Y o U

  15. So… everyone here is making fun of her but: she’s not wrong. And instead of laughing we schould take her serious then even tough she’s a child she’s way smarter then a lot of adults

  16. we don't need talking garbage to tell us enough about bad politicians

if they "ruined your childhood", go visit africa, afghanistan or syria
and you will see that you have much better childhood then they have

  17. All the planets in the solar system are pulling on each other very gradually and have been for a very long time. Get into that young girlie! Extreme hot and cold spells on this planet are just what happens. Then humans came along & make a big deal of it. Read some history books FFS!

  18. I'm all about saving the planet & reducing my economic footprint, but this girl really gets under my skin. Perhaps it's the dramatization of it all. Most of us understand that the world is in a critical state, and a lot of us are trying our best to do our part in fixing it. Maybe she should go back to school and invent something that will contribute to saving the planet, instead of standing on stage complaining about the state that the world is in.
